Ryan and the Jets don’t only fly in the face of political correctness when microphones are around – it’s how this organization has come to operate fulltime. Under the strong arm of Roger Goodell, NFL teams have cooled on character-risk players. The Jets have treated this as an opportunity to acquire stars at bargain rates. Last season they obtained Browns receiver Braylon Edwards, a locker room diva and off-field handful at times (in October ’09 he was arrested in Cleveland for decking a friend of LeBron James’s), for fringe players Chansi Stuckey and Jason Trusnik and two mid-round draft pick. Edwards gave the offense the star possession target it was lacking.
This past offseason, the Jets infused some much-needed speed into the passing attack by acquiring Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes from the Steelers. Holmes is suspended the first four games for violating of the league’s substance abuse policy (he likes weed), so New York was able to get him for a measly fifth-round pick. Character risk? Sure. But come Week 5, Hollywood-turned-Broadway quarterback Mark Sanchez (another selling point for the folks at HBO) will be throwing to arguably the best route runner in the game.
A month before getting Holmes, the Jets had traded a third-round pick (which could become a second-rounder) to San Diego for cornerback Antonio Cromartie. The über-talented fifth-year pro was available because he’s the type of guy who fathers seven kids in five different states and racks up five different paternity suits. And, more damningly in the football world, Cromartie sometimes refuses to make an effort as a tackler or zone coverage defender.
